Warm, welcoming Sikh temple. We stumbled upon it while taking a post lunch walk in the neighborhood, and were immediately welcomed in by members who walked out the front door to greet us. We were given a tour and something to eat! Turns out they have meditation classes open to the community as well.

Guru means, teacher and Dwar(a) means Door/Gate, in Sanskrit language. So the meaning of \Gurudwara\ is doorsteps of the Guru. Sikh Temples all around the world are known as Gurudwara(s). \Guru Nanak\ was the founder of Sikhism and the first of 10 Gurus. Sikhs believe in the Holy Book \Sri Guru Granth Sahib\. It's truly a unique among the World's great scriptures. A collection of devotional hymns and poetry of founders of Sikhism and writings of people from other faiths, first compiled by the Fifth Sikh Guru, Arjan Dev in 1604. Guru Granth Sahib is not worshiped as an idol, but emphasis is placed on respect of the book for the writings which appear within. It is more about moral and ethical rules for development of the soul, spiritual salvation and unity with God. A small group of people called \Paathi\ (seeker) read and sing Beanies (words) from the book with traditional musical instruments, Harmonium and Tabla. I don't understand the meaning of what they sing mostly, but just listening to them brings up an inner peace. They pray on Sundays for sure and home cooked delicious Indian vegetarian lunch (Lunger) is served after prayers. The food always tastes better than any restaurant I have ever been to. All people... irrespective of their race, gender, cast, origin, religious believes or status are welcome in Gurudwaras. The most admirable practice of Sikh people in Gurudwaras is, that they strongly believe in serving other humans with respect from the depth of their hearts. Everyone is treated equally. It's very common that a CEO of an International Organization would visit Gurudwara, clean, mop the floor, serve food to others and go home just like any other ordinary dedicated worker, all around the world.
