As a Rail-fan and Lionel train collector, this museum has it all. I had always thought the N&W 611 was the classiest and finest steam engine ever built, compared to the SP 4449, the Chessie 614, the NYC J1 Hudson. The photography and settings of a bygone era are all here. Take your time to browse and enjoy the collection.

Beautiful photos of a long gone steam engine era in lovely Roanoke. Winston Link connected the Human Experience to the profound impact of the American railroad by including timeless photos of people who lived, worked and depended on the Norfolk Western railway with his photos of the engines. Powerful.
Interesting man and a great small museum.Take the time to watch the film.
This is a totally unique experience. This is the only collection of steam powered trains in the world. Recently shared with a museum in Berlin Germany with great interest. Do not miss it as well as the History Museum of Western Virginia which shares space in the art deco former N&W passenger station. A must see while in Roanoke.
Really enjoyed the museum. If you love steam locomotives, this is a must see. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Parking is tight.
