If you plan to see the lava beyond the viewing point (which wasn't all that exciting), rent a bike, ride down until you reach the final barricades, and hike toward the mountain. Two miles in and you'll be just a few feet from surface lava. It was surreal! There are many bike rental shops in this area, but Kaimu Rentals seems like the most legit. You can reserve online, and they provide everything you need (flashlight, lock, first aid kit). The ladies working the counter we're extremely friendly (shout out to the gal from Walla Walla!) and the guys who sized us for our bikes were helpful. Overall, awesome service and experience.

Rental experience was easy (online). Staff answered my questions and gave good directions. The drive over from Kona took a while and we left at 0200 in order to see the sunrise. The staff was friendly and took quick care of us (driving us out to the hike start point). Great views of the lava and sunrise! Will be recommending to all our guests!

I made a reservation for 5:30pm. It was the good time to ride a bike to lave flowing (sunset was 7:10pm). I could arrive about one hour before sunset, and enjoy the view w/ and w/o sun. To me, in the transit period was the best view because after total dark, it looked like just red something, but with some lights, we can see the red color as well as the smog. I recommend to start 1.5 or 2 hours before sunset time. The most memorable part was not the lava viewing, it was riding with milky way. The day was so clean sky, so i could see the night sky with uncountable stars including milky way. It was so special experience. There were other shops and seemed cheaper than here, but i loved the chainless bike. I saw two person had some trouble with their bike's chain.

What great customer service and awesome opportunity. There were 4 in our group and we rented 4 bikes and the shuttle service. Highly recommended the shuttle service, they take you halfway out and pick you up when you call them. We called them when we got to the pickup point and waited about 5 minutes. We then got a call asking where we were, come to find out, we hadn't made it back to the pick up point. The lady said "no worries just make your way and we'll wait. Be careful and don't rush." Very customer friendly. The bikes were in very good shape for being rentals and ridden over lava roads. Highly recommend this outfitter and would definitely use them again.

These guys were great. Got me a fantastic bicycle, were very accommodating and provided all of their service & rental products (including binoculars) at very reasonable rates. Bravo! And THANK YOU!!!

I've got to admit I was pleasantly surprised. They were really friendly and had a large selection of bikes. We were even able to outfit our 6 year old. There are a ton of other shops that you can rent from and I honestly didn't do much comparison shopping but I wasn't at all disappointed with what we got.

Excellent bike rental experience. I had an early morning reservation on a holiday and the staff showed up on time and knew exactly what I asked for in the online reservation. He was very helpful and friendly. Checking in and out the bikes were speedy and smooth. Bikes were in good condition too.

Great time biking to the lava. These guys were super friendly. We rented two bikes with kids trailers. The bikes were ready to go at 0500 and both were in good shape. Bring plenty of water and a hat, it got into the 90s once the sun came up. The ride to the lava is pretty easy but the ride back wasn't fun. Allow the whole 4 hours if you can. On the left is the ocean and you can see the lava streaming into the ocean. Then go right and you can find lava that you can walk right up to.
