Very convenient. They drove us out and we rode back. Nice people. They knew where to point us for the lava flow. Be prepared for a long walk once you get out there; the bike path only takes you so far...

This shop not only have very nice quality bikes for all sizes, but also a shuttle service to Gate 2, which is a quick walk to Gate 3 where the real hike on lava field starts. My wife and I took advantage of the shuttle service to make our hike shorter. They give their customers cold bottled water and a granola bar in the beginning. A very nice customer service touch, I think. I tested the fat tire bike while waiting for the shuttle service - the ride was smooth on the emergency/local access dirt road. George, the business owner, made sure we can contact him upon our arrival back to the dirt road. He told us , the last trip is at 10:30PM. So I budgeted 2 hrs and 45 min for our return night hike. It took us about 2 hours during daylight (leisurely hike with picture and water stops). The night hike back to the pickup point took a little longer (2 hrs 55 min). George had to wait 10 min past the cutoff time for us to get to Gate 2. I was texting him of our location when the cutoff time was close. We really appreciate the extra customer service. I'm sure he would have found a way to come pick us up if we arrived later. Budget about 3 hours for a safe return night hike to the dirt road. Night hiking on a lava field is hazardous and safety must be a priority over speed.

Tyler, George, and Louie were not only very professional and efficient, they were friendly, engaging, and made us feel relaxed. My wife had never ridden an E-bike before, and I'd never ridden a recumbent bike. They patiently gave us instructions, and made sure we knew what we were doing. The bikes were in perfect working order, and made for a wonderful experience biking out to where we could hike in to see the lava. We asked a ton of questions, and they were well-informed and happy to answer them. Highly recommend this outfit!

We called in advance to reserve our bikes. Although we arrived lat, Tyler was great about it. He was waiting for us when we arrived, made sure that we all got bikes that fit our sizes, made sure that we knew how the gears work and knew where we were going and sent us on our way. We are newbie riders. The rental was perfect for us to take our time, enjoy the scenery and stop for a few pictures. We did not get within an arm's length to hot lava, but see saw it from a quarter mile distance. and decided it's close enough for us. Still mesmerizing as it glows in the dark.

Kalapana Bike Rental was the perfect place to begin our hike to the lava fields. They gave us a choice of either renting bikes and riding the 3 miles to gate 3 to begin the hike over the lava fields up to the lava flows or to take their shuttle and ride in that you gate 2 and walk the mile to gate 3 to start the hike over the lava fields. George, the owner, was very helpful and provided water and flashlights. You definitely need both if you are going to be out at night. Cell phone flashlights do not cut it! The other thing to do is to load a compass app on your phone so you can find your way back at night. We started hiking on the lava fields from gate 3 at 6pm. After hiking and hour and a half, we still weren't to the lava flows. We could see them on the hillside and decided that we were close enough. I'd recommend starting at around 4pm. We used the compass to navigate back, called George and he drove out to gate 2 to pick us up and drive is back to our car. It was a great adventure!

The people were nice—helping us choose the best bikes for us and offering good advice for seeing lava. They gave us water and a snack and greeted us on our return with a cold bottle of water. And the lava was amazing. Great experience. We will use them again.

It's so refreshing to deal with a company that pulls no shenanigans on visitors. They didn't try to wave my car off Road 130 into their own parking lot for a hard sell. Nor charge late fees that cost an arm and a leg. It's just nice people with well maintained bikes.

This is best way to see the lava with great bikes. Excellent value for money.. no need to waste on tour guide. We were unable to make the date of our initial booking and turned up a day late but they still gave us the bikes we had reserved. !!!!
