Backpack sites: Obtain firewood permit at self-service building near trailhead. Get firewood at the shed located after the start of the trail to all 5 sites (there is little documentation that this shed exists but it's easier than getting the firewood from the campground shed). Prepare to carry in water, which you can get at the campground - there are no potable or non-potable sources nearby. Site 1 is sunny and right next to the trail. Site 2 is off the trail a bit and more private and shady. Site 3 is at the end of the trail & mostly shady. Sites 4 & 5 are off the Wawa Way trail, which splits off at the firewood shed. Signage is very clear. Pics are of Site 3 and sights along the hike to get there. Bear box, latrine, tent pad, picnic table, and fire ring were all in great shape! You can hear some road noise when the wind dies down, but 1 mile hike from the parking lot, it's a great location to feel remote and still have some resources within reach.

So worth the stop and the tour is a MUST. We had a great time! Super interesting and fun tour. Our tour guide was informative and funny. You get to take a mine shaft elevator ride down to the mine and ride in mine cars to and from the large room. Our kids 8, 6, and 4 loved it!! If you like history, this place is awesome!!

The mine tour comes highly recommended from me! I took an elevator half a mile down, went on a mine cart ride and had a tour guide (a former taconite miner... and opera singer!) who did a great job explaining the history and sang miner songs in different languages (Finnish, Welsh and Slovakian, from memory). I plan to go back for sure. Oh, and do not miss a chance to see the elevator equipment in operation!

Great tour of the mine, and a lot to see on the surface without paying for the tour. Our 3 and 5 year olds loved it. Beyond the mine there is nice hiking, lake access, biking on the Mesabi trail, a new day use area near the new campground east of the mine area with picnic areas and fishing pier.

A fascinating trip deep into Minnesota's oldest and deepest iron ore mine. The guides were knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the mine, and the train ride was a highlight. Don't miss the motor house/engine room to see the cars being hoisted in action!
