Great place to go to! I really appreciate the philosophical differences between aikido and other martial arts.

100% positive experience. I came to the dojo with no prior martial arts experience and an interest in adding good physical practice as well as the opportunity to learn more about the \martial art of peace.\ I found both of those things, as well as an amazing community of people! There is a very accepting environment at the dojo, which you would see demonstrated in every class. There is a good gender balance, and members of the adult class varying in age from under 15 to over 60- with a variety of skill levels and backgrounds. My son has taken the Kiddo Aikido classes, and loves the instructors and the activities. He has learned a lot about mindfulness, confidence, and also loves being able to practice his new moves on his mom! If you are curious I recommend stopping in to watch a class. You can also take a couple classes to try it out, and there is no pressure or big contracts to sign. It is a challenging practice that takes time to develop skill, but there are many benefits to that practice- and you can start wherever you are, and you will feel welcome, accepted, and get to know a great group of people.

I give Aikido Center of Lancaster my highest recommendation. I learned of ACL when a friend invited me to try a free class out. I didn't know anything about aikido but I researched it a little and was intrigued. I felt especially drawn to its non-competitive and peace-oriented philosophy, so I took my friend up on his offer. On my first visit to the dojo, I found an incredibly warm and welcoming environment. Students of all levels were happy to work with me even though I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. They were consistently patient and reassuring as I made the same mistakes over and over and over again. I was immediately hooked and I've been a member and attending classes regularly for over two years now. I was really just hoping to find a fun way to get some regular exercise. I found that *and* so much more: a fantastic community of kind and intelligent people, a philosophy that serves well in nearly every aspect of life, and a practice that I expect to enjoy into my old age. Aikido is an extremely effective martial art but it's not about punching and kicking or hurting people. Nor is it about winning fights. It's an art of self-defense and also the only one that I know of that places an emphasis on protecting your attacker as well as yourself. Aikido embodies the philosophy of peaceful conflict resolution. As such, it's ideal for law enforcement, bouncers, security guards, and the like. There are no aikido competitions and the training environment is egalitarian and cooperative. If this interests you, I strongly encourage you to visit ACL and observe a class or even try one out.
