Too bad most beds are empty due to lack of funding.

The reason there are empty beds is not that there's a lack of funding but because the shelter director doesn't want to fill them up and doesn't want a lot of people staying there. She has a history of this behavior, even before the covid-19. There are 3 staff people who work there evenings and this is plenty to monitor the 30 or so homeless staying there. Funding is not the problem. Their capacity is 90 but there's only a third of this number staying there now and it's because when new homeless people call, wanting to come in, they're told the shelter is filled even when it is not. This is dishonest on shelter staff's part (the director) and for this reason, I think there should be a new director, someone who likes and empathizes with the homeless wanting to come in because the present director does not, which explains why she put 60 homeless people out this past Sept. and not because they did anything wrong or broke a rule, but only because she didn't want that many staying there. She deceives the media and city leaders into thinking she's doing everything she can to help the homeless while she denies entrance into the shelter from homeless people who are living outside who want to come in, telling them the shelter is full when in reality it is not. Any guest staying there can verify this it is not full. I don't know how the director lives with herself operating like this.

I don't respect that although the shelter has a very small number of guests staying there (maybe 15 people) and they have lots of empty beds -- if a homeless person calls or comes in and wants shelter, they're told there's a waiting list or to come back in two weeks. This is inappropriate and management clearly doesn't want to help the homeless like they should and are able to immediately. This isn't a country club that they should pick and chose who they want. Anyone needing housing should be let in immediately if there are beds available. If you want to know an accurate number of guests who stay there, ask a guest who knows and who has no reason to lie. Management will lie to the public and make the numbers different than what they really are.
