We loved Shadow Mountain Escape! The timber frame cabins are gorgeous and very comfortable. We felt at home the moment we walked in. They provided everything we could possibly need for a relaxing vacation. In addition to the wonderful accommodations, the nature trail that surrounds the property is a lovely way to pass the time watching deer and listening to the babbling brook that runs along the trail. We highly recommend Shadow Mountain Escape!

After COVID scuttled our original plans for my husband's birthday, I discovered Shadow Mountain Escape through some random Googling. It looked so nice we chose it on the spot and we weren't disappointed. The setting is quite intimate and far from some of the cookie cutter cabins you see in the area. We opted for the Butterfly cabin, which seemed to offer the most privacy of the four options. We enjoyed s'mores by the campfire and walking among trees and streams accompanied by the many deer nibbling the grass. The Riddles supplied yummy baked treats which were waiting for us in our cabin, and we also opted for a wine and cheese package. Cell reception truly is almost non-existent, and there is limited wifi in the main lodges. If you're like us and want to get away from your various alerts and notifications for a few days, this is the perfect place to disconnect. The cabin had satellite TV and a DVD player with a nice assortment of movies when it was time to wind down for the evening. It was kind of nice to rediscover entertainment not curated by the major streaming services! Unlike most vacation rentals around here, the Riddles aren't some distant property managers in another zip code, but really love their slice of the woods and seem to want you to love it too. We're recommending Shadow Mountain Escape to all our friends and family and hope to return someday! A final note: if you're coming westbound on Lee Highway (US 211), Jewell Hollow Road is an extremely sharp left turn coming off a decently steep grade so just be prepared.
This is the best romantic get away in Luray!! I absolutely loved it here. I stayed at the butterfly cabin with my boyfriend just before Christmas. It has snowed a few days prior and the property was absolutely beautiful. Karen and Ralph are amazing hosts and they had a super cute get together on Friday night for all the couples in the cabins and gave out sweet German treats by the fire. There were also treats in the cabin when we checked in, it was delicious! The Butterfly timber frame cabin a had full kitchen, full bathroom and a comfortable bed. I could not have found a better place to stay, 10/10 would recommend to any couple who would like to retreat to the mountains of Luray.
This place is truly a dream right out of a story book. The owners, Karen and Ralf are greatly involved in making sure you are happy with your stay. It’s a quiet private place tucked in a mountain side where life is perfect if only for a few days. The deer walk around so peacefully as you stroll along the lake and trails on property. Book your stay now! You will be so glad you did.
Excellent service and peace and tranquillity. From the day you arrive until the day you leave, you feel a part of the property. A home away from home. If you love nature and want to unplug from the hectic everyday demands. South Mountain Escape is the place to go!
