My toddler had a blast. Personal instructor, she rode the pony and brushed and walked him. We toured 3 barns of beautiful horses. Our instructor answered all her questions with a smile. Highly recommend!

It has been a fun challenge without being stressful. It is friendly to all riders with different experience levels. When I started here as a beginner, I felt comfortable and I quickly grew to love the place.

Northern Virginia is horse country. Be well aware of the dangers of equine involvement before you let your children ride. We live one mile down Hoadly Road from Crisswood stables. My daughter had ridden for four years prior to moving to Virginia and once we move here, we began looking for a new barn to ride and take lessons at. We obviously started at Crisswood mostly due to the proximity to our house. Once lessons at Crisswood started, for three months, all she was instructed to do was walk, change direction, trot, change direction, walk, change direction, trot, change direction. When we had had enough of the monotony, we arranged a private lesson with one of the instructors. After arriving for her first private lesson and getting the horse ready, the instructor called to tell me she forgot about the lesson time. We were done with Crisswood at that point. Fast forward four years and my daughter has found a good farm, bought her own horse (on my dime) and competes year round. The experience has been simply wonderful although very, very expensive. If a parent is looking to provide their child with basic knowledge of horsemanship, then Crisswood is perfect for you. If your kid goes to travel soccer and weekly karate lessons, Crisswood is perfect for you. However, if you want your child to experience an in depth learning environment centered around these wonderful beasts, look for a competitive Eventing or Dressage barn in Catlett or further north. There are dozens of exceptional farms out there with fantastic trainers. Northern Virginia has multiple Olympic riders in the area. But just be ready for the cost because it isn't cheap. Her horse and everything that comes with it sits right below the mortgage payment on the monthly bills.
