I’m a “round trip” member of the Mercer Island Saddle Club - as a teenager and now decades later as an adult (with sojourns before and after at 17 different boarding and riding facilities). So I’m confident I can speak with a measure of perspective when I say that this place is special. It’s a nonprofit horse stable and riding club (with an emphasis on youth). It’s run and maintained by the members. And the membership has always worked hard to keep the barrier to entry low by keeping costs down. To be clear, the club itself doesn’t employ horse trainers or riding instructors (though individual members can and do) and it doesn’t run or administrate a riding school or lesson program (though those opportunities exist also through individual members). What I’ve been super encouraged to see is how the membership is working to create riding opportunities for those who don't own horses. There always seems to be more demand than supply (as the physical Saddle Club facility is small), but kids have just shown up at the barn, pitched in to help, connected with members, and found opportunities to ride and learn. I love that community aspect about the place and it’s been so awesome seeing the lengths people go to to help put kids and horses together.... Like the other positive reviewers, I, too, don’t know who the negative reviewers are. The club’s membership is small and those names don’t number among them. Wishing them well.

The Mercer Island Saddle club is a wonderful place. My 10 year old daughter has been welcomed by everyone, and the leadership has made an effort to include her in everything that happens at the barn. Pony club classes are offered there, and they have made an effort for girls who do not own horses to be included every step of the way. The leadership, the barn manager, and the barn president holds a tremendous amount of integrity in all they do, and I am grateful they are there.

MISC is a true gem in the area, and has been an incredible resource for our daughter and our family. We have been members for 5 years. The mission has been to be a resource to kids that are interested in all things horse, and the benefits include, increased responsibility, confidence, maturity, and independence . The irony it is that as a co-op, and on Mercer Island, people would think it be pretentious. Its the opposite. Its a CO-OP, and a community based on horses. Board and membership is very reasonable. It is NOT about arrogance, and appearance. It is NOT a high end competition barn. After 5 years, the organization is ever evolving - and for the better. There is a pony club starting, as well as group day trips to different events, as well as those hosted on site. It is a great place to start, or revisit all things equine. Its all about the right fit.

I've been visiting and feeding horses at the saddle club for YEARS and never knew how to get involved. 3 Months ago I stopped in and the atmosphere was totally transformed. People were engaging non-horse owners and encouraging them to be a part of the barn community and making a concerted effort to do community outreach. My kids are all loving it and we don't have a horse! I cant decide if it's watching the people/kids work together or the horses I like more! Excited to see where this new journey takes my family. Important to know it is all volunteer, so it can be what you make it... and I think that is reflexive in the kind of people at the time involved. In the past (years ago), you could feel the unwelcome atmosphere when you tried to give a horse a carrot, so it seems super dependent on whose involved at the time. It's definitely a hands on experience and thats what I want for my kids. It's open to the public to walk in and out, but completely dependent on members to do the work and take initiative. For now, I'm excited and hoping I can lend myself to help rebuild / reshape / transform this gem of a property. Mercer Island was filled with farms/barns when I grew up here, there are only 2 left... and this is one. Let's keep it going for generations!

As recent members of MISC, we have been incredibly happy with the facility and enjoy being part of this community. Everyone has been very warm and welcoming since the first day we walked onto the property. My daughter has learned a tremendous amount about riding and horsemanship through the other members. Everyone is there to share their love of horses and help others. It is truly a unique and wonderful place that we feel so lucky to be a part of.
