For Spy Rock: This is a nice, easy hike with a good view at the top for all. The top provides an extra incentive for hikers with a large flat area you can camp overnight at. Just up from this flat area is a 'scramble' you can make to a rock face that looks over the surrounding area. The Appalachian Trail cuts through this hike so anyone passing through would do well to make a brief stop here. It is well worth your time to make this a part of your Central Virginia hikes.

The private road/trail from the Fish Hatchery parking lot to the boundary of the National Forest is posted. The parking lot is open but according to the local sheriff, the road /trail is posted closed to the general public. Recommend using Meadows Lane road to either Crabtree Meadows or Cash Hollow road to access the AT trail and approach Spy Rock from the north.

I've been coming up since I was a small child. Great spot to visit to see and feed the trout and maybe enjoy a picnic lunch. Bring quarters for the fish food though and maybe bring more than a couple because feeding the fish is kind of a lot of fun. :)

My family took my 8 year old daughter there to see the fish and have a picnic. My daughter loved feeding the fish. The worker was very friendly.

Had planned on just taking my son and good friend to see what a trout hatchery was all about but was so surprised to see a Bald Eagle and was told by some of the employees to hang around and not 1 but 2 eagles made an appearance and was told that the pair are frequent visitors as well. Want to thank the guys that work and run the hatchery for the tour and there southern hospitality. This should be a must stop and see on everyone's trip......

The drive alone is worth a trip up here. Great for the kids. If you want an awesome hike as well, the Spy Rock trailhead is a few hundred yards up the road from the hatchery. Be sure the visit the country store in Montebello.
