Morganton almost became the capital of NC in the 1700's, however Raleigh was chosen due to its central location. The NC Supreme Court was also held here.

A perfect historic spot. Love the structure detail and the lawn areas under huge trees.

The courthouse has been turned into a Historic Museum. Many pictures including before and after photos of restoration. Many artifacts from former Senator Sam Erwin jr.. The curator there is very knowledgeable and will spend time and answer any questions you have and take you on a nice little tour. She also has knowledge of the restaurants around the area and is a great resource. I would recommend this to anyone. It doesn't cost go in but they do like donations.
