Love this experience! My parents brought us when we were young and I got to do the same with my children. We appreciate the tribute to the men and women of the military services. The weather was pleasant but can get hot on the deck. The deck gives away to some amazing Charleston views which is a bonus for sure!! You have to pay 5 to park. Admission was 24 for adults and 6yo and younger was free! Prepare to walk a lot and read! Great for any history buffs out there! **This part was closed Due to COVID. ️

Altough very rusty from outside (suggesting it might sink soon) inside it looks surprisingly good (for its age). Nice to walk around an it offers more than you might expect. Highly recommended for people who like military history. And watch your head!
Quite cool to be able to actually go into and walk through a U.S. Navy submarine. The walkthrough is very interesting. However, the submarine seems to have not been able to resist the natural forces around it, as the bottom and top have become quite rusted and has plates coming off.
I agree with another reviewer, out of the three ships at Patriot Point, the Clamagore was really not made for tall people. The ships bulkhead doors are small as well. How anyone could move quickly through the ship is amazing to me. These guys worked under some real difficult conditions. Super hot, super cramped, no light. Amazing to see. Better go soon, as she will likely become a reef soon.
"USS Clamagore (SS-343) is a Balao-class submarine, presently a museum ship at the Patriot's Point Naval & Maritime Museum outside Charleston, South Carolina. Built in 1945 for the United States Navy, she was still in training when World War II ended. A National Historic Landmark, she is the only known surviving example of a GUPPY type submarine" - from Wikipedia
The life in a submarine is hard to imagine until squeezing into Clamagore. Tribute to all crew in the submarine for whatever missions. Imagine without any timing devices how would your body react this confined space physically and psychologically...
Great experience but needs more restoration.
Don't let the look of this sub fool you. Yeah, it looks as though its about to sink, but that's the outer hull. Inside, this boat is perfectly preserved. It's very tight, so big folks might want to stay away. Plus the climbing in and out might be a deterrent, too. Other wise, a great example of a cold war diesel electric sub. Highly recommend this self guided tour.
