I had a first time meeting with the CPA Mr. John Mastrangeli to talk about tax options for a corporation. There were no payment options agreed upon and I was told the first meeting is simply an introduction. Towards the end of our 1 hour meeting, I was told there is a 220/hour consulting fee (which was bargained to 175/hour). I paid 175. I am upset because I was never made aware of the hourly rate prior to my appointment and would not have agreed to the meeting had I known this beforehand. I have met with other accountants who have told me that they would charge 175/hour to proceed if I would like a detailed tax prep session but Mr. Mastrangeli performed this without my specific asking to do so and then charged me 220. To be fair, the information was helpful and he is personable - I am disheartened at the surprise fee and 'sneaky' tactic because I do recommend this firm from a strictly tax perspective. I recommend in the future that the business clearly state their fees beforehand and as a consumer, to ask what the fees are. I did not ask because I was specifically told there would be no fees for the first meeting.
