New Partners Community Solar ("New Partners"​), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, installed the first Community Solar Project in Washington, D.C. Collectively these arrays on three downtown rooftops constitute one of the largest solar installations in the District. Rather than keeping or selling the renewable energy produced from the panels, New Partners arranges for the tenants of affordable housing projects around the District to share all of the energy billing credits at no cost. For the first phase of the program, 100 tenants will each receive approximately $20 per month as a credit on their Pepco energy bills. New Partners has initiated a second phase and have been contacting building owners in DC, with strong financial and policy support from the District’s Department of Energy and Environment. New Partner’s primary focus remains to be downtown commercial rooftops, although we also have the flexibility to have our arrays hosted on the rooftops of other building types. New Partners purchases and installs the panels through an experienced solar installer/manager and under the supervision of our experienced solar engineer and then arranges for maintenance and insurance. There is no cost to the building owner. Brookfield Properties is the host for the three arrays in the first phase – so New Partners has experience accomplishing this with one of the largest institutional office building owners in the District, learning how to how to address the concerns of building owners to get these projects done.
