Good for kids
Beautiful place with a lot of history. A great way to spend a day, exploring the town and its history. The drive there is very scenic and a real treat as well. If you're in/around Tucson and looking for a fun way to spend a day, do take the time get out to Ruby. Highly recommended! Do note that tarmac ends 7 miles before Ruby. These last miles are on a reasonable dirt road and you don't need a high-clearance/all-wheel drive vehicle to navigate this stretch. However, the 7-mile, dirt road bit would be a challenge right after a heavy rain.

Interesting place, but for what we paid for the visit and the disinterested caretaker, we were left to ourselves to see the place. The schoolhouse was the only apparent restored building and that was still in progress. Glad we went this time if year, as other reviews have warned of abundant snake activity...
travelled all the way out here and found no Starbucks or Hotel with room service / valet parking! nice place though
Drive was very scenic...along the way to Ruby, stopped in Arivaca at the Cantina for a quick refreshment, and hit the farmers market (Saturdays only). One more thing, make sure when you come to the fork in the road that seems you should follow sign that says Warsaw canyon, DO NOT, stay left to get to Ruby :).( It is pretty far down the dirt part of the road before you reach Ruby) We arrived to an open gate, Even though we got a permit ahead of time. Met with caretaker and she stated they had open gate on Saturdays, so if you wanted to visit without reservations, Saturday is the day!)She gave us a map and some spots to make sure we looked at. My wife and I hiked around for several hours and had a GREAT time! Be prepared with water and some snacks or picnic. There are some very nice, challenging climbs Like the one to the Cemetery. Overall, it was VERY worth our time and was an excellent day trip!!
The drive to Ruby can be done in a 2 wheel drive. The road is dirt but decent. Pay attention to the weather patterns, flooding of the road is a big concern when it rains. We literally had the whole ghost town for ourselves to explore and it didn’t disappoint. The mercantile where the double murders happened at in the 1920’s is still there, and the tailings pile has now created its own ‘beach’ in the AZ mtns by the mexican border. It created its own little lake too. they are in the process of making access to Ruby by use of a permit online. It was 15 per person, cash only when i walked in to meet with the caretaker. i highly recommend setting aside a weekend and come check this place out! Note- i would recommend going during winter months due to the unusually high amount of rattlesnakes in the area.
An interesting place to visit! We really love ghost towns, but this was a lot different than I was expecting. First, it still had residents until 1941- so a lot of the artifacts and remnants are from that period (ie, cars, barrels, a washing machine, etc). Second- there is A LOT of modern trash (pvc pipe, one mine shaft was FULL of cans and trash, etc). That was so disappointing and confusing. Why have a caretaker, if the place would be better off with no one there? A couple of the buildings had new lumber inside, but there didn't appear to be much restoring going on. Maybe if I read the book before we went, I wouldn't have been as disappointed and could've overlooked the modern trash more.
Reserve a permit online a few days before you go!!! Trip report: Dirt road was dry, easy travel east to Ruby from Aravaca in 2wd vehicle regular clearance. Check website for permits. Gate was locked, had to use access code to enter. Campsites and day use is primitive. No water, electric, or shade pavilions available. Bring your own. Border patrol presence was occasional on the drive in. 1 road stop. Passed 10 patrol vehicles on the way in. The town is very picked clean. Expect not much more than buildings and occasional large artifacts like pool table, piano, etc. Most of the metal mining equipment is looong gone.
Fun little day Trip.
