I’ve been to YMCAs all across the country and this one is by far the best one I’ve been to. Let me start off by saying the basketball court is only used for basketball which is something I love. Other Ys will have karate and day care and use the court to where it seems it’s never available. The equipment is all up to date and clean. The facility is large and has an amazing variety of equipment so you’ll never have to be in line for a machine, bench or rack. The staff are friendly and it’s overall an excellent gym! I’ll drive from Newport News to work out here that’s how much I’m satisfied with this gym!

Got membership for free for 6 months as part of my accommodation. Main thing is bad Hygiene. The machines are great and many options for family with kids. this gym lack of hygiene, shower aren’t clean on regular basis, the racket ball court need renovation. Showers are so small that the curtains rubs to your body. Would you want to shower or get a skin infection ? I saw twice dead cockroach in the shower. The sauna door doesn’t even close ( female ) the sauna is just the worse condition. Needs serious renovation and way too small! Towels are old and some have stains and on top of it, sometimes they are not even available. For a gym to be charging this price and seeing how badly it is kept that’s just surprising. Once I saw the dirty showers, I looked at the carpets, they aren’t clean so carpets in the changing rooms not even the best idea to start with let alone if they decide to neglect it. Housekeeping team and renovation for the entire place needed. The main thing I liked is the people but again planet fitness is cheaper and great too! One life fitness offer about the same and better kept in my opinion. So Needless to say I didn’t join the Y.

The way this branch and its managers have handled the COVID lockdown and reopening with restricted hours is absolutely atrocious. They are unorganized, uninformative, and rude. Which is unfortunate as some of the basic employees are truly friendly and wonderful people. I understand that things are more difficult during this time, but I chose to pay my fees throughout closure to support my community gym and am being treated with so much disrespect by management at this gym that I am forming an anxiety complex around coming to get my limited workout in. I’m not sure about other branches, but the Blocker Family Y didn’t send a single email notifying patrons of closure, reopening, or anything in between. I have traveled to the gym during lock down and reopening several times to find the doors simply locked and no signs out front. Certain rules about when doors will be locked are not communicated and the on-site managers seem stressed and mean. Minimal communication and organization. My partner and I have emailed their facilitators, directors, and managers with questions and comments to get answers or more understanding of the situation and have not had a single email returned in months. I finally sent a complaint email to their director one month ago and never heard back. They have no intention of reaching out to communicate or improve this situation, despite many chances. I suffer from chronic pain and use their machines to manage it, so I’m currently desperate, but as soon as I find another solution, I am ending my 10 year long relationship with YMCA to avoid this branch and taking my business to a community that still serves its people

My husband and I use these facilities for therapeutic purposes to help mitigate chronic pain. I would like to thank everyone for the changes that they have made to accommodate members during this difficult time.
