This has to be one of the best United States Air Force Museums in the world – perhaps only surpassed by the Smithsonian. On display are some really very unique treasures from the history of flight in the USA. This place is really big and includes everything from one of the original Apollo (15) spacecraft and space shuttle simulators, to incredible aircraft which helped to defend the skies of the USA – including my favorite, the A-10. You’ll never understand how truly amazing this aircraft is until you see and understand how much of it was actually a huge Gatling gun. Seeing so many of these historic air and space craft will certainly give you a better appreciation for the brave men and women who flew and operated them. Some of the lesser-known exhibits include the Gemini B MOL (an early space lab) and a Mercury spacecraft, not to mention the Project Man High gondola, which, until Red Bull came along, served as the jumping platform for the world’s highest free falls back in the late 50’s. Other famous aircraft include the B-17 Memphis Belle, the F-117, and the super cool SR-71. If you are in Dayton, this museum should be the highlight of your trip!
