My wife and I did an 8-hour guided instruction at the ice park. We are beginners and the instructor was great. We learned a lot about setup and safety, but spent most of our time ice climbing in the gorge ice climbing. By the end, we were making our way to the top. Would highly recommend Basecamp Ouray. The instructors are extremely skilled, knowledgeable, and friendly. And you can set your own pace. We will be going back here for sure.

Basecamp in Ouray, CO is a solid and intelligent choice when looking for outdoor guiding service. We hired Charlie for a day of ice climbing and were so happy with how communicative, professional, and knowledgeable he was. He clearly outlined what we could expect. We had a specific meet time, what we needed to pack, and a general outline of how the day was going to go. Charlie was extremely sensitive to our needs and desires. He had a smooth way of pushing us to try hard things, and then shared in our joy when we conquered our fears and succeeded in climbs we would not have ever attempted without his careful eye and encouragement. This past weekend (Jan 10-11, 2021) I took Basecamp Ouray's two day \Intro to Ice\ course. It was exceptional! My instructor/guide was Charlie Faust. Energetic, knowledgeable, professional, friendly. and EXPERT! These guys really know what they are doing. I was challenged but not overwhelmed. I was met where I was in experience, and was taught at an appropriate level... covering the basics of safety and technique in the introductory course. And... it all takes place in the world renowned Ouray Ice Park! Curious about Ice Climbing? This is the place! Strong Recommendation!
My partner and I did two days of guided ice climbing with Charlie, and it was awesome! He has an incredible amount of technical expertise and was able to give us a ton of targeted personal feedback. He was super fun to hang out with, had great stories, and was very professional as well. We will absolutely be getting back in touch with Charlie for our next trip!
First timer here at via ferrata! We spent a week in Ouray and this day was the highlight of the trip. Excellent course and fun guides kept this trek interesting. I kept looking for ways off the iron holds to try some free climbing which made it slightly more challenging if you're interested in that. I am no athlete at 6' and 250lbs and managed this climb well. Plenty of passing stations to allow you to move at any pace. This was a great way to explore climbing with an easy route available. Our guide was Xander, excellent time we had with him and his learning about his experiences.
