I instigated the genesis of this workshop after taking a lighting class from Richard Dischler over ten years ago. His style is unique. He provokes thought and creative insights you would otherwise miss. Best of all, he doesn't tell you what is good, as that is simply one opinion; rather, it is his goal to develop within the photographer his or her own unique \photographic voice\ (my term, but totally appropriate). As one progresses--as I progressed--I developed my own style, unique from anyone else. The workshop is also collaborative, wherein friendships develop based on shared interests in topic or need for technical assistance. Workshop members who have been around long enough have developed that photographic voice that is so powerful that when you see an image, you know whose it is. It is a fabulous journey, and one I intend to keep going as long as possible.

Richard Dischler is a bridge from the master photographers of the Ralph Weiss era to the present. I’ve been studying with Richard for several years and as a result my photography skills have not only improved but my ability to “see” has taken a huge leap forward. I credit Richard with the many awards my photographs have earned.

I’ve been a member here for 3-4 years (though there are some who’ve been here as long as 10). I can confidently say that my photography has improved quite a bit. I’ve won awards, etc., and I feel very happy with the progress. Moreover, I’m now teaching and tutoring as well, something I would not have expected. There are a large number of very talented photographers in the group. However, there is no sense of internal competition. It is a very supportive group, and the varied styles and expertise provides a wide range of talents from which to learn. If you are interested in a supportive group with which you can participate in advancing your photography, I can highly recommend the workshop.

I came to the workshop with a pretty good background in photography. In the workshop I have learned to see more deeply into an image, not just the content, and to translate that into a better print than I could previously make. The print, after all, is the viewer's experience of the photographer's visualization of the subject. Developing the ability to make masterful prints is a primary goal of the workshop.

Having been in the workshop for eight years I find that as the days go by I continue to learn more about seeing, rendering and printing my artwork. As well the community of talent in the workshop is a synergy and a great pleasure to be associated with. While my initial intent was to improve my work I had no idea of the level that it could be taken.
