The wife and I have Costco & Sam's Club but we live close to the Smart & Final store next to Ace Hqrdware and just wanted to browse. They do have items a tad bit pricier than having a membership elsewhere but they do have things of need. We thought a few things and were satisfied.

We called ahead, because I'm leaving town and my senior Mom won't have transportation to come back. The man who answered checked inventory on 2 items, but refused to pull them to the front for a fast and easy check out. We arrived about 2-3 minutes past close, but the young man who asked his Manager Katie said they couldn't help us out. Super bummed, because our usual and closer location closed a few years ago and this one is a bit of a drive that we rushed to try and get those specific TWO items. I understand people close sharply and I would have loved to have made it there sooner if I could have, but their refusal to make a fast and easy check out only a couple minutes past close demonstrated a lack of customer service. We could have gone straight to the register, used a card, so they could have still dealt with closing out the cash...there are retail solutions to help someone out. The manager couldn't even bother to tell us and sent the young man instead. Just comes across very rude, even though they two guys were nice about it. Very disappointed, because I've shopped here before, but won't be inspired to come back next time I visit my Mom. As for inventory, there are special niche items at Smart & Final, which is why we come here, though they run out sometimes. They used to be nice about special orders, but I'm not sure if they still do that. It feels like a mini membershipless warehouse, so don't except clean. Feels dusty. I don't think there is a comfortable, easy to access, made ready for customer use restroom, but there is at the Whole Foods next door (along with a water spout for filling your water bottle).
