Beautiful landscaping , big church, plenty of parking. We liked watching the sheep graze. The gift shop was closed when we visited.

I was visiting family nearby and had wanted to visit a monastery for a long time. I only met one person. He was at the information desk and was very welcoming. I am not Catholic, but they welcome all here. I walked through the book store/gift shop, wandered through the chapel and catacombs, and meandered around the grounds. It was an excellent respite; an opportunity to escape the busyness of being a pastor, seminary student, father, and husband. This is an excellent place to slow down and reconnect with God.
The most incredible place to go. You really find a calmness along with peace and serenity. Every time I visit this place I feel so much better after I leave. Just walking through it and looking at everything really seems to cleanse your soul. Highly highly recommended, especially for those who are having hard times or are feeling lost or worthless. It's very uplifting.
I can vouch for candles sold. Simple style. Excellent for conferencing under the permission of management arrangements. All business with overnight accommodations were curtly and held court well. Seen the couple room since it accommodated conference leaders, reasonable for a monastery style. St. Gertrude house was of country style, furnished with simple antiques. All accommodations are quiet, undertakened by any monastery in the local diocese area.
The environs are absolutely beautiful and brings you a tad closer to God! The crypt chapel is amazing with its art work and statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I love coming here to meditate and do a Holy Hour in peace and quiet. The monks raise sheep and it's beautiful to see them grazing with the donkeys. There's a gift shop selling religious articles, music and books as well as monastery made jams and other good including beeswax candles. A little bit of heaven on earth.
A beautiful setting for walking around, checking out the little bookshop (books, candles, jams, cards, & more), and attending the various religious services throughout the day as the Benedictine monks observe their faith. One of my favorite things to do here is to come for the blessing of the crêche on Christmas Eve. It's very special.
Great retreat, great location and very peaceful; definitely returning.
Peace!
