I have been practicing aikido for about 6 months. I began this adventure as I began a new chapter in my life. I have found an activity that advocates a complete development of one's self; mentally, physically, and spiritually. Aikido is a holistic approach to the improvement of the entire self. The culture and atmosphere at the Easter Sky dojo is one of cordiality, collegiality, and positive mind. The black belts in this dojo are as interested in the learning and advancement of the lower belts as they are for themselves. All are quick to mentor and support the learner. They too acknowledge they learn from the lower belts. It is not the belts that matter. It is the learning and the growing. Under the leadership of Paul Gardner sensei and Rose Pleninger sensei, all are encouraged and helped to develop calmness, and to develop a positive mind while gaining proficiency in the martial art itself. That calmness carries outside the dojo. Aikido kokikai, the style we learn, is becoming a part of, and in part, shaping my new life. My fellow students are becoming fast friends. I am fortunate and grateful to be here.
