Black Star is great. I recommend going in to the shop so you can try on a few different sizes and see the colors in person (not to mention, supporting the business directly probably helps them). Their prices for custom work seem totally reasonable and I see a custom bag somewhere in my future. As for the bags themselves, I got the large messenger and I love it so far. The padding on the strap is nice and thick. It's super comfortable/secure when you're riding. There are plenty of pockets for storage. There's not much to dislike here. I think I'm going to buy a backpack next so I can have the best of all worlds. Something worth noting: if you are coming from a bag like Tumbuk2, there is a trade-off. The Black Star bags are vastly more secure on your back due to the fact that they are built to ride higher (with a tighter strap, at kind of an angle across your back) and they have a third strap that connects to add extra support. Timbuk2 sit lower on your back, and are more prone to flopping around; but due to this they are also WAY faster to whip around the front of your body. I have had many times where I was riding with my Timbuk2 bag and needed to grab something out of it and I never even stopped pedaling. With the Black Star, it's more of an operation (un-latch the cross strap, loosen the main strap, then whip the bag around the front of your body). Anyway, something to consider (and I think almost everybody will prefer the more secure bag).

Black Star Bags...what a company! Super for Travelers! They hand-make bags to order and sell bike-bags, accessories related to bags, etc. I have utilized their services numerous times. The first time was a lark. I travel a lot and wanted to customize my backpack to suit various needs including putting in hidden pockets for documents/money/meds etc. The owner found a way to customize my bag beyond even my expectations. It has fared well and even prevented loss when my bag was rifled through in a shady hotel in Guyana. They obviously never found my hidden pockets or I would have lost a great deal more. Recently, I needed to have a bag repaired and he had it fixed before I'd even gotten 10 minutes from his shop. I returned for my finished product. The quality is always excellent and the price reasonable. I'd strongly advise anyone who needs a bag made/fixed/customized/etc. to go there first. Daniel Coker

The staff is amazing and very knowledgeable. I had a custom bag made and couldn't be happier. The bag is gorgeous and it really pops. I will be back to buy more bags for different purposes. Update: purchased an olive backpack this time. The bag looks great, it's comfortable and durable. I'm hooked and will be buying a third in a few months. The nice employee helped size me and made great recommendations. I'm thankful for the help.

I have come to Black Star Bags twice for repairs to Ortlieb bags. Both times the service was professional, quick, and affordable. Everyone at the shop was great to work with. I was impressed how well they were able to repair bags from another brand. Check them out if your bags rip or break and you need a repair, you'll get great service.
