My mother was visiting for only a weekend and this was the second time someone treated her less than just because of her accent. Really makes me so mad and I was so glad my brother was with them and not me. How do two 65 year olds constitute a vandalism threat? She showed you her Pétanque club card and you asked her to leave anyway. Oregon makes people of color feel unwelcome. Shame on your club, and shame on you Steve!
A great club. Maria and D Ellis -- The people who turned you away were NOT members of the PPC, but of the Lawn Bowling Club. If you had met members of the petanque club, you would have found them very happy to see you. NOTE that (despite the location inside a public park) the petanque and lawn bowling courts are NOT public property and are NOT open to the public. They are privately insured by, and maintained at considerable expense, by the Lawn Bowling Club. PPC sublets the petanque playing fields (formerly a lawn bowling field) from the Lawn Bowling Club. As part of that agreement, only members and guests/visitors of PPC may use the petanque courts. I did the same thing as you, except that I showed up at a time that I knew the PPC was having an event. I was warmly welcomed by the PPC and spent the afternoon happily petanque-ing with them. And I'm sure that if you had shown up at the same time, you'd have been warmly welcomed, too. So the next time that you visit, check out the PPC website, or contact someone, so you will know when you can show up and expect to find someone. If you're looking for a public, open area to play petanque in the Portland area, Foothills Park is probably you're best bet... that's where the Lake Oswego Petanque Club plays.
Today my wife and I was visiting our son in Portland. We planned on visiting your petanque courts for a few friendly games on Sunday6/16/2019. When we arrived, a woman with a group at the lawn bowl rushed over and asked our intension. We told her and we were asked if were members of the petanque club. We explained that we were from Sacramento club and just wanted to play a couple games. She called the club president. He left it up to her. She told us to leave. How rude! Is that how people who come to visit are treated? You can trust me when I say that we will never visit your courts again. PS your excuse that vandalism is why it is a private field in a public park is rediculous and petty. A three and a half foot fence is not going to stop anyone from accessing YOUR field when you are not there, but it is a great way for you to feel all high and mighty to stop people from playing a game at a public park.
I Received A Free Lesson; I Am Going Back Sunday To Play Again!
Wow. This is rediculous.
