A short kayak trip brought my son and me to the head of the Outer Loop Trail, which, due to high tide, was mostly underwater. We saw countless seabirds (ibises, sandpipers, egrets, herons) and walked over to Bird Shoals, a terrific shelling beach. On the way back to our starting point, we saw one of the famous wild horses for which the park is known. Epic trip!

One of the best swimming beaches in the area. The ferry ride was 13 round trip to Bird Shoals. There were shells and sand dollars too!

Had the best time kayaking around the reserve.

Carrot Island offers a nice, relaxing, family nature adventure. We saw the wild horses and they were beautiful. The hiking trails are nice, but there really is horse poop everywhere. That is to be expected when you go to an island with wild horses. Fun and relaxing. I would definitely go back sometime. It also has a nice view of the historical Beaufort waterfront.

This was the best 3 hours I have spent in a very long time.
