Jay Strock
There are three simple reasons why Roots is a five star experience: (1) first rate facilities, (2) first rate instruction, and (3) first rate people.
First, the gym, lockers, and equipment are beautiful. The gym makes great use of space, everything is well organized, well maintained, and CLEAN. Check out Philadelphia Magazine’s description of Roots in the 2017 “Best of Philly” edition for a perfect summary.
Second, Roots’ instructors are the best. I feel like I can offer a unique perspective on the gym’s instructors because I train regularly with each one of them and my kids train here in the kids’ Brazilian jiu jitsu program. Roots’ instructors all deliver detailed, highly technical instruction that connects with all levels of student abilities. Whether you’re a new white belt with limited or no experience (like me) or an experienced competitor, Roots’ instructors will improve your game. The kids’ program is also worth a special shout out, there is no one I trust with my kids’ safety and jiu jitsu training more than Morgan Beverly and Kyle Huang. I have two sons who train at Roots and not only do they have tons of fun, but they are developing important skills that translate to all other sports and everyday life like core strength, body awareness, dexterity, self confidence, etc. Add in the fun, exercise, and new friends, and it’s a kids program that can’t be beat.
Finally, the people are the core of what makes Roots the best. From head instructor Levi LaLonde down to the newest student, the Roots’ environment is supportive, positive, and fun. My training partners always push me to be better and help me to improve; it’s expected here. Don’t worry if you’re new, no one has forgotten what it’s like to be a beginner, so everyone works together – the teamwork ethos makes everyone better, faster.
Quit thinking about it and give Roots a try, you’ll know right away if Brazilian jiu jitsu is right for you. If it is, then Roots is the place to train.
