The Mariposa Sisters mission is to empower women’s wellness internationally through the use of visual storytelling. We sisters comprise of striving health professionals looking to connect with women around the world to create a global healing movement. The sisters wish to address the deep wounds of gender suppression and collaborate with communities to end gender inequality. During one of our medical trips in association with Naturopaths Without Borders, we saw that women in Puerto Penasco, Mexico, had an incredible desire to heal and learn practices for bettering their lives. Seeing this vigor, the Mariposa Sisters were encouraged to choose this place as the location for their first project. Here the Sisters will be at service to these women through active engagement in nutrition education, mind-body practices (meditation, breathwork) and physical empowerment. From the group of women we met in Puerto Penasco, it was realized that the majority of these women and girls were victims of rape, sexual abuse, domestic violence, and many more atrocities. Despite how tragically common these cases are, they expressed that there is little support and work being done to stop this behavior. They shared that they were raised with emphasis to suppress their voices, needs, and aspirations in order to cater to men of their family or community. These emotional wounds toll a heavy burden on the health and well-being of these women. During this engagement, our experience with these women will be filmed to share their stories on a global level for the world to see and create a sisterhood of support, mentorship, and assistance from helping them to heal from the magnitude of trauma they experienced. With our documentary, Project Mujeres, we wish to inspire hope in our audience to take action in their own communities to support the healing, equality, and success of women.
