Honestly 1 star is generous. I gave this hostel a chance because not all the reviews were bad, but couldn't stand to stay the night there. Initially the hostel didn't have that warm welcome feeling u get from most hostels, but what would one expect at such a price. What did it for me however was not only were there no towels so I had to go buy my own, but there were bed bugs. I CANNOT do bed bugs. They're the worst. I checked out within hours of checking in because of this.

Nice hostel and the staff is knowledgeable about customer-centric association. It is inexpensive if you are prudent and that is being smart.
Rooms were not clean whatsoever. Only one towel was available and smelled like it hadn’t been washed with laundry soap. No air conditioning, only fan. There were people sleeping in the hallways who were most definitely on drugs. Would not recommend this place to anyone.
12/2020: BED BUGS AGAIN! Spraying for bed bugs today. Many people are long term residents with occasional short term renters. Belongings are not cleaned per protocol which makes getting rid of the bugs impossible. Many section 8 people with mental illness live here. Some are prone to violence and outbursts. Six people per room in twin size bunk beds. Limit is currently three per room, due to Covid. The room is uncomfortably small. One bathroom, no shower, in each room. The shower is down the hall. No laundry facility. No storage for belongings. Live out of your suitcase. There are 12" x12" locker squares on the main floor available for valuables. Two-story facility with bedrooms upstairs, common areas downstairs. Frequent, unannounced visits daily, by the inn-keepers, add to the already zero privacy. Poor lighting. No elevator. One community refrigerator for an entire hostel on the main floor. Centralized heating questionable. VERY cold in the facility and the rooms. No microwave, coffee pots, or space heaters allowed in the rooms. No parking. Surrounding Gaslamp district, Little Italy, shopping/eating averages 10-20 per meal. Homeless people everywhere.
Booked right away. For hi season was the Best deal in town. Bed bugs and guys ODeeing. What a wast of resources.
Great location. Friendly Neighborhood
I showed up at 5:30 PM and no one was there. In the window it said the place is closed from 5-7 every day, along with some other random times it was closed. I was never told this beforehand. I had already carried my luggage a half mile from my parked car, so I then had to carry it all the way back. When I later spoke to the manager, he said there was nothing he could’ve done to notify me about this change in policy. Thats not true. He could’ve update his hostekworld acct so that it includes in the welcome message the new hrs. If he would’ve just been cool with me it would’ve been fine, but he just said “ya well it’s posted on the door”. Lol as if that helps. What a loser. F**k this place and the manager.
The RK hostel has been extremely accommodating to my wife and I during our stay in San Diego. Thank you for all of your hospitality
