Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra (NISO) is a thriving regional orchestra. It is a fine example of excellence in the arts in a small community. Nearly every time I attend a concert I reflect on how fortunate we are to have big city musical arts in rural Iowa. It is also a great example of coordination between communities, high schools, the university and businesses. NISO encourages youth engagement in the arts and ancient hosts a youth concert that brings in many hundreds of students annually. It also offers scholarships for outstanding young high school musicians to advance their studies. I am proud of this organization and its impact on our area.
