McCulley Design Lab is a joy to work with. Thanks to Janet and John’s in-depth knowledge and keen interest in mid-century design we now live in a perfectly rebuilt 1962 home that reflects our style and personality but honors the original design intent of the house. This dynamic duo spent countless hours listening to our ideas and collaborating with us on our aspirations for the house. I wanted to walk through our front door and feel like I was in a tree house. They made that happen. I wanted to keep as much as we could of the original house and John embraced that desire, even though it presented many structural and design difficulties. John envisioned and designed a cantilevered master wing as an add-on for the additional space that we required, incorporating both modern elements and mid-century design for a seamless but interesting transition. Throughout our project, John and Janet used their ingenuity to create spaces that not only function beautifully for us but also cause us to constantly notice and appreciate their thoughtful attention to detail.

That's what attracted us to their work initially, but it was something less tangible that made us huge fans and repeat customers. They were politely persistent in pushing us out of our comfort zone from a design perspective. The result was a better, more dynamic design than another firm may have produced had they just accommodated our tastes. MDL was the perfect partner for us!

I have worked with McCulley Design Lab for 25 years, which started when John developed our company logo during the first days of Capstone Advisor’s existence. Since then they have done our corporate imaging (logo, letterhead, etc.) and every one of our major corporate office designs, including our current offices in Carlsbad which was ground breaking in its ‘creative’ feel when built 12 years ago, and still look extremely fresh and contemporary today. Their team has also done the design work on a wide variety of our commercial property assets, including the complete renovation of The Ivanhoe, our Class A office building in La Jolla, as well as the total transformation of The Presidio that converted an ugly (no other word sums it up as well) industrial project into a very hip urban retail destination at the entrance of USD in San Diego. They have done other numerous projects with equally great results. John is a thoughtful and collaborative designer who always delivers exceptional results while taking what we discuss as a ‘hoped for’ goal and delivering something that exceeds expectations. We also have worked with Janet on a wide variety of projects ranging from creating dynamic and compelling leasing boards, thoughtful corporate communications, and well thought out property signage. Who can make COVID signage fun? Janet can, that’s who!
