I love South Lyon Community schools, however I do feel that with the new ways of teaching we need to allow our children to be themselves, to sincerely be children, I don't agree with the constant testing, Each child will learn differently and I have seen the (grouping) where the children need to fit into a bubble or they are considered to be behind or too advanced, some kids can grasp topic quicker than others, and some struggle to get it at all. it means we need to work a little closer to the students, take more time to explain things. Overall I feel the schools are ran very well, and the children are happy at school

Our child's teachers have been excellent. But the people who run the district are absurdly rigid and stubborn. One of my children is a straight-A student, but the district refused entry into an honors English class. Why? Because of the 11 criteria they used to measure qualifications, only 10 2/3rds of them were passed. A slightly lower score on one part of one test held my child out. So instead, my child sits in a regular class every day, bored to tears. When we asked why the district used these criteria, they said "We have always done it this way." When we asked what evidence they had to show that these criteria were good, they said "We don't have any evidence." At one point they told us maybe we should move. Our kids' teachers are very good, and I don't want to disparage them. But if your child falls anywhere outside of the "normal" range, good luck. Chances are you'll be really disappointed if your child requires anything special. Oh, and don't expect to be given even the slightest bit of consideration - all you'll hear is "No, No, No".
Our son has been going to South Lyon schools for the last six years, and there are zero race problems as suggested by another reviewer. In fact, our son shares his bus stop with an African American girl who seems quite secure and not at all concerned about going to school each day. As far as academics, all of his teachers have been very, very good, and our son is thriving. The South Lyon School District is always one of the higher performing districts as measured by the MEAP scores. While we could have easily afforded to enroll him in a private school, we're very happy here.
My kids have been in this district for 6 years. All the teachers have been very capable and activities have been well planned. Excellent resources for the students.
A lot of race problems at this school district
