Found this place by accident, so glad we decided to check it out. Great historical ruins and there's a guided tour you can do from the state park office in Challis (I think it's online too, but download it in advance because there's no reception in Custer). For the adventurous, the Custer Motorway continues all the way from Custer to Challis. It's 30 miles and the road is in decent condition, but I wouldn't chance it if you don't have a high clearance vehicle, preferably with all wheel drive.

Dont mind the dirt road up, it's all part of the ambience! Well maintained road, and restored historical site. Knowledgeable volunteers-stop and listen to their stories! Well marked trails for easy walking through area, picnic benches, restrooms, gift shop with candy items, t shirts, gems, rocks, gold panning items. Bonanza has the actual old cemetery (take the clearly marked fork as you head toward Stanley-it's not far from Custer). Custer is a nice little short stop in Idaho history!

Fabulous mountain magic! Lots of hiking, quad riding, fishing, old cabins everywhere to explore. Would absolutely recommend this trip. It’s awesome.

The history and scenery is wonderful. If you are driving through or staying in the area please take the time to learn, explore and enjoy our history.

Out of the way, but worth the first hand look at the mining experience out West. Includes re-created/refurbished buildings, equipment, and signage of all who contributed to mining in this Idaho area. Note: I think the roads are also used for logging, and weather may close roads....plan accordingly. Review and pics also include Bonanza, were taken in 2003. TIFA 2003
