I am sorry to ruin a perfect rating, I really am, but our experience is exactly what irritates me about mechanics these days. We knew we needed ball joints done. When I called to set up the appointment I was told they would look at the car and call us. She didn't say the words \before we do the work\ but I promise it was implied. At 2pm or so we hadn't heard anything so my husband called. It was done and ready to be picked up. I was a little annoyed that they didn't call before working on it but I assumed that meant it was no more than what we had discussed on the phone. My husband picked it up. Other than the ball joints they also did the control arms. I'm sure the work was necessary. I'm sure the job was done well. The car is riding very nicely. Everyone was friendly. But what would we have done if we didn't have the 800? Thinking we only needed ball joints we obviously were not expecting the repair cost to be that high. I'm also sure what we paid was an appropriate price. But we didn't know the control arms needed to be done. I remember a time when it wasn't just a nice thing to do, it was expected that a mechanic called with a quote and needed an \OK\ from the customer before the did any work. It's just a nice thing to do. In my opinion it's good business practice to be sure your customer can afford to pay you before being forced to either give up grocery/rent/utility money or have to leave their car there until they can afford to pay the bill. I'm grateful we didn't have to make that difficult decision but my suggestion to this mechanic is to build their business on kindness and concern for their customers. It will go a long way.
