My group was really happy that we found this place to camp in August. I was trying to decide between camping closer to the New River and Fayetteville, or camping closer to Summersville, or somewhere in between. We usually prefer to camp right on a river (this campground is not on the river, it's roughly a mile away), but we also like a little more solitude to be loud when we want and to be quiet when we want. Since it wasn't Gauley season, we had this place all to ourselves (they only rent to one group at a time in the off-season). That means basically a football-field-size grass field to spread out in, for tents, cars, games, etc. And when it rained, we had the stage area to hang out in, to stay dry, and to enjoy the sound of rain on a tin roof. The stage is also connected to a sort of \covered pavilion\ area where you can cook or store gear out of the sun and weather. The owners of the farm are very nice - they check you in, check you out, and stop by once a day to see if you need anything - otherwise you are on your own and free to do whatever you want. Before arriving we were a little concerned about portajohns instead of other facilities, but they were actually great - there were 6 or 7 of them, they were very clean, and since you aren't sharing them with 100 other campers, they stay clean! Summersville lake is about 20-25 minutes drive away. Fayetteville is about 45-50 minutes. If the owner didn't give you such good/accurate driving directions to the farm, it might be a little hard to find the first time - it's WAY off the main roads. But that's part of what makes this place so great. For 5 days it was our own little slice of heaven, far from our regular lives, and far from anybody else.

This is the perfect weekend get-away just 4 hours from the Cincinnati area. If you love the mountains for camping and hiking and great scenic photographs, this is the place to go. If you love kayaking, Tawney Farm is the perfect place to stay by the Gauley River. The owners are friendly and helpful, the campsite is immaculate and beautiful. You are sure to meet new friends and enjoy great music by the campfire. You can't beat waking up in the morning, coffee mug in hand watching the mist rise above the river with the mountains beyond.

Excellent camping experience. Hosts were super friendly and helpful. Located close to the river. Free firewood was awesome, and James always made sure our camp was stocked. Will definitely be coming back!
