Black mold. The unit I lived in had leaks off an on for months and never properly got fixed (after calling many times) Finally it got so bad that the kitchen walls were soaked and maintenance came to inspect and opened up the walls and it was filled with black mold. I immediately requested to get out of my lease. It took many calls and arguments with the property manager who was unwilling to tell me if the mold was hazardous or not. Have the apartment inspected before you sign anything. That kind of situation is hazardous to health and was due to poor maintenance.

It isn’t terrible. The complex is largely concrete, making it very quiet. It’s also pretty well kept, and the neighbors are nice. There are a few things to note, however. When we first moved in, we had to scrub the apartment from head to toe. Whoever is in charge of cleaning the rooms before new tenants move in is pitifully inadequate at their job. Residue on every surface in the kitchen, dirty doors, floors and walls, dust on the fans, and the air vents were just filthy. Our room was not properly sealed, which we noticed during a monsoon when our room leaked from multiple places. In the bedroom, one end of the ceiling was actually unfinished, and needs to be re-concreted. This means more than water of course, as you’ll invite critters inside. We’ve seen crickets and roaches. After living here for about two months, and after numerous maintenance requests, we’ve yet to have someone finish sealing up our place. This brings me to my next point. Maintenance is included, which sounds great, but when it takes them two weeks to respond to your request you’ll want to just pay for more reliable service. Bottom line, have the place inspected before you choose to move in, if you can. It’s just best to nip these problems in the bud.
