Laser hair removal is an option for permanent hair reduction. For this treatment, the laser operator uses a focused laser beam to destroy the hair follicles in a small area. Since the laser beam only destroys hair at a particular point in its growth cycle, the same area must be treated several times over a period of weeks. Each treatment provides a 15-20% reduction in hair growth. After each treatment, the hair affected will naturally shed within 2-3 weeks. Successive treatments are scheduled 4 to 12 weeks apart depending on the area, and optimum results usually involve 6 to 8 treatments. Possible side effects of laser hair removal are skin irritation, redness or swelling and, rarely, a burn.
Laser hair removal works best on dark hair; clients with red or blonde hair usually do better with electrolysis. Electrolysis
Electrolysis is a permanent method of hair removal. Modern electrolysis removes individual hairs from the face or body by destroying the growth center of the hair with chemical or heat energy. To do this, the electrologist inserts a fine probe into the hair follicle, using a minute amount of current to destroy each hair permanently. Electrolysis works on any skin or hair color. Possible side effects include bruising, scabbing, welting or redness, but these side effects dissipate quickly.
The number of sessions involved in removing unwanted hair obviously varies person to person. The client should discuss the number and timing of sessions with the electrologist before beginning the process. Electrolysis is a commitment by the client that can require frequent—even weekly—visits at the beginning of treatment. It’s important to stay on the recommended schedule to achieve optimal results. While undergoing electrolysis, the only method of hair removal that can be used at home is shaving or trimming. Other forms of hair removal, such as waxing or tweezing, promote hair growth and interfere with the treatment.
Pre-Treatment Instructions
If you have decided to opt for Laser Hair Removal, there are a few ways that you can help ensure that the procedure achieves the desired results. Please contact us at (802) 876-7378 if you have any questions.
Shave the treatment area within 12 hours prior to your appointment. Unlike electrolysis, we do not need to see the hair to treat it. If you’re applying topical anesthetic cream, be sure to follow the instructions precisely for optimal results. Stay out of direct sunlight and tanning beds for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment and for at least 2 weeks after treatment. If this recommendation is not followed, you will put yourself at risk for burning, hyperpigmentation and/or scarring. Always use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher while undergoing laser treatments. Activation of Herpes (Herpes Simplex I/II) can occur following treatment on individuals with the virus. Taking antiviral medications 24-48 hours before treatment can help prevent an outbreak. Prior to your appointment, be sure that the area to be treated is clean and free from any makeup, deodorant, lotions or creams. Consider what you wear to your appointment. You will not want tight or scratchy clothing on the skin that is going to be treated. Avoid dark clothing around treatment area. Do not wax or tweeze hair for at least 4 weeks prior to your appointment. Shaving is the only method of hair removal to be used while undergoing laser treatments. By not following this recommendation, the effectiveness of the treatment will be reduced. Areas with tattoos cannot be treated. Stop Retin-A and AHA’s 1 week prior to treatment.
