Water from the Volcan Mountain range supports three of the largest watersheds in the San Diego Basin--the San Luis Rey, San Dieguito and San Diego River watersheds. It also makes the 'Coast to Crest to Cactus' connection by sending water east into San Felipe Creek and the Colorado River Basin. The Volcan Mountain range is a key wildlife corridor in the Peninsular Range that connects the San Jacinto Mountains in the north to the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. VMF supports agency partners like the San Dieguito River Park that manages the Coast to Crest Trail which connects the crest of the Volcan Mountain range in Julian to the San Diego coast at the San Dieguito Lagoon in Del Mar. VMF was foundational in establishing the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve, managed by the San Diego County Department of Parks & Recreation. The Santa Ysabel Preserves East & West are also managed by SD Parks & Rec. VMF was also instrumental in establishing the San Felipe Valley Wildlife Area (managed by the California Department of Fish & Wildlife) on the east side of Volcan Mountain connecting the Volcan Mountain range to the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
