I take the VRE from Fredericksburg VA to Crystal City or L'enfant (and back) every work day. The vast majority of the conductors are fabulous, the train is normally clean. The seating is comfortable. What would be an hour to a two hour drive, depending on traffic, is about a an hour and 20 minutes. No stress or road rage from driving (though sometimes other customers get weird) and on the train you can relax and enjoy the ride. The scenery is pretty, I listen to podcasts or work. I have a folding bicycle which are allowed on all trains, and fit perfectly into the lower section of the luggage rack. Check the website for restrictions on full size bicycles.

Center of most everything you want to see in DC
Always crowded platform and never enough room once they start delaying trains. The spree of train mechanical issues seems like a warning to VRE to start hiring more help.
First time on VRE, they get an A, super clean and the have real size restrooms!! AWESOME SAUCE!!!
