Fantastic place for a winter backpacking trip with my son! Did 23 miles over 3 days. Started at three Hope Iron Furnace trailhead. Needed some trail maintenance in some areas, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Privies at each of the 3 campsites, and the hydrants still had potable water! I have seen where Zaleski gets crowded in the warmer months. We hardly saw anyone else while we were there from December 26-28. There are trail markers A to Z that refer to a guide you can print out that gives factoids about the areas you'll pass through. Beautiful trip!

We went to Moonville Tunnel towards the evening. There was actually a crowd. It wasn't a long hike. Also, we visited an old graveyard/cemetery. Of course by this time it was pitch black with no light pollution. The only light we had was from the flashlights from our phones. You have to be extremely careful where you're walking. For most part lots of the gravestones were so old they have eroded away. Very creepy place to say the least. It would be a good candidate for a horror movie for sure. The trail are gravel and no mud to step in. You just have to watch your step and take flashlights.

If you looking for a strenuous but not super long backpacking trip you should definitely consider the south loop. Make it a 3 day trip if you like with two campsites. Each had several spots and water is available. Vault toilets only. Very hilly terrain so decent footwear is best. Definitely check out the website if your looking to rough it for a weekend and enjoy backpacking or are just getting start. Good starter loop for sure. I recommend the map cause the trail can split and be deceiving at times....gotta watch the tree markers! Love this area! Been going for years

Beautiful hilly trails winding through hardwood forests in peak color! The mist rose from Lake Hope in the early morning. The highlight for me was gazing up into a dark sky packed with millions of stars glittering like diamonds. Campsites and facilities are clean and well-organized.

Really awesome place with great things to see and discover. I'll give it a 5 star rating when I shoot a wild pig there
