Very friendly and experienced staff. Great spot to stretch your legs, and get all the forest information and passes you need for your adventure.

I visited the zig zag ranger station 12_11_2020 because I had a xmas tree cutting permit for mt hood national forest and asked the ranger for the best place nearby to cut a tree and he told me to drive all the way up to Government Camp (where it was snowing!) and try the area snow park. I think he was trying to be unhelpful as I found a section of national forest just a few miles away (and not in the snow). Dangerous advice, bad advice, ignorant advice or just passive aggressive I dont know.

I stopped there to get some hiking recommendations last summer. They were so helpful. Not being that familiar with the trails I had many questions. I left happy with trail maps and a plan for the day. Thanks to all the rangers who staff the station.

They're closed due to COVID, but still answering phone calls and giving great info... which is more than any of the ranger stations in the Sierras can say.

The Zigzag Ranger Station is a great place to stop off and visit on your way up to the Mount Hood National Forest. They have maps and information and permits. Some of the permits that you can get include firewood cutting permits and mushroom collecting. Everything is very inexpensive. Help keep these resources available for everyone by following the rules.

Would not sell me a NW Forest Service Pass. Gave me terrible directions to get one at a place 4 miles out of my way . Signs on highway said the Zigzag Ranger Station sold them.

When my car got stuck in snow on a small forest road recently, I managed to get through to FS HQ in Sandy telling them my location. Within an hour Officer Mireles had arrived and provided support as I waited for a tow truck to arrive. Little did we know that it would take the truck 8 hours to get there, during which time Mr Mireles stayed close by, was actively helpful and worked many hours of overtime to ensure that I wasn't left alone in the forest, where there was very little cell service. As a single female and somewhat new to the area, thank you so much. Tow truck arrived in complete darkness at close to 1am so you can image how grateful I was not to be totally alone.

Very knowledgeable staff which cheerfully answers odd questions. Note that the hours of 7:45 a to 4:30 p are oversimplified; there is a lunchtime closing (12:00-1:00) every day of the week and are summer hours (May through October). Winter hours are less generous.
