This is a nice place for a self directed retreat. Visit the website for information on how to reserve a room and the cost. When you arrive there is some basic information on the bulletin board in the inside lobby to get you checked in and in your room. To get to the Abbey Church you have to walk about 10 minutes up the road. Walk out of the retreat house and return up the road you took to get there. The small building on the right is the gift shop and past that further up the hill is the Abbey Church. There is a sign showing the way. There are lots of stairs to get to the Church. I did not see an elevator. There is elevator access in the retreat house. Meals are simple and you may want to bring a few snacks.

Excellent hosts, great comfort, lots of quiet, perfectly seated in the Shenandoah valley, they really respect the quiet rules!

JMJ Heaven on Earth?! I think so! I love making Retreats! This Trappist run Retreat House is absolutely SUPERB!! The silence which permeated my soul with serenity, the nature beauty of the surrounding countryside, and the opportunity for quiet prayers and to join the Trappist community for early morning prayers and Holy Mass were soul repairing. Retreatants were required to keep silence which I greatly appreciated. However, at meal times (simple but delicious) the Guest House Master (at that time) would read faith-related excerpts from his selected book. Additionally, the Retreat House has a Chapel where Retreatants could visit for private prayer times. Just glancing back in my memory banks refreshes by entire spiritual being! Praise the Good God for such a Heavenly sanctuary!

Just completed my 8th retreat at the Holy Cross Abbey ... a blessed sanctuary where you can read ... journal ... pray ... reflect ... enjoy the property ... and even join the monks to observe their services. I'm so happy to have discovered this very special place ... cannot help but come away with new found insights and peace of mind ... looking forward to my next visit ... George Lawrence (Bel Air, MD)
