We did a full day with Al and I could not have felt more supported or safe. He did a great job explaining safety measures and encouraging best climbing practices. He was fun to spend time with and had great climbing stories from around the country. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.

Learning how to build natural anchors with Midwest Mountain Guides was an excellent choice! Our instructor, Al, is very patient, allows you to interrupt with any question that comes to mind, and makes sure that the teaching style he is using works for you. My girlfriend and I felt confident about setting up and climbing on our own top rope anchors after our day with Al. With the small group size, just my girlfriend and I, we got much more personalized/custom instruction throughout the day. We will no doubt be returning for a lesson with Al when we are ready to learn more.

We had a great day with MMG. You absolutely get what you pay for on the guided climbs — our guide Al was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly all day. We got to customize our trip and do the climbs we’ve wanted. My partner and I both have some experience outdoor climbing and we were very impressed with the guide and his safety procedures. We will be coming back.

We used MMG for our Rock Climbing experience for students at Northwoods Wilderness Therapy. The staff were amazing to work with from setting up the events to the actual climbing everything was professional, thorough and above all welcoming. The staff did an amazing job working with students who were nervous and took time to connect with each student. I could not be happier working with MMG and will definitely be continuing to partner with them in the future. I highly recommend MMG for all your climbing needs!

I've worked with a couple of different guides in the midwest in recent years and for the most part they've not been able to deliver instruction that reflected 1) a deep technical knowledge base 2) a dynamic client specific approach to instruction 3) an open-mindedness which allows for the latest evidence supported techniques to be adopted and taught and 4) a broad enough skill set that allows me to continue to learn from as I progress. Amazingly, Al Wiberg and Midwest Mountain Guides were able to deliver. I spent a day with Al focusing on anchor systems and it was easily the most influential instruction I've received. As a result of my time with Al, I'm very confident that I have the knowledge to efficiently build reliable anchors using natural features or trad gear. We covered both types of anchor systems onsite at Taylor's Falls in one day. The amount of content here (especially if you want more detail/background like I do) is quite a bit. I recommend taking pictures and notes if these concepts are new to you so you can practice at home. If Midwest could improve in one area, I think having a core-skills document for each course which summarizes what was covered and high level concepts / visuals for each would be fantastic. This is how I've organized my notes/pictures after the fact. There may be limitations in what they can provide which I'm not familiar with. Lastly, Al runs a very professional shop which to me is table-stakes but I haven't found it very often with all guides. In the current environment, Al also took the right steps to managed risks related to COVID which again is table stakes for a good business. Overall, fantastic experience and I look forward to continuing to work with Midwest Mountain Guides.

I learned a lot and had a ton of fun. It was a beautiful day, and even though the park was crowded, our guide took us to some of the less busy routes. Didn't see many other climbers where we were which was very nice. I would recommend Midwest Mountain Guides to anyone that feels they'd need a guide on their outdoor rock climbing trip.

I did a guided climbing day with MMG and was very satisfied with the experience. Our guide was friendly, very knowledgeable, and was great at helping us improve and get the most of our day. I'm definitely considering being a repeat customer.

Top notch from start to finish! I contacted Al Wiber in early 2017 and discussed a customized climbing experience for my 2 sons and I at Devil's Lake, WI in late summer. After an initial email inquiry with some basic questions and information, Al called me back within days and I was able to provide specifics on my our physical abilities and capabilities. It was great speaking with Al over the phone to better coordinate. We settled on a 3-hour guided trip, ranging from easy \u003e moderate \u003e difficult climbing routes. We remained in contact over the next few months, periodically checking in with one another and fine-tuning our plans. One of Al's guides Vicente met us at a trailhead in the park. MMG provided climbing shoes, harnesses, rope, etc. We packed a lunch and snacks for ourselves. Vicente had a clear knowledge of the park and surrounding area and really connected well with my sons, ages 7 and 11. We felt confident with Vicente and trusted his abilities and guidance. Vicente led us to several known climbing routes in the area that really tested our courage. He was supportive and patient and we were able to really push ourselves physically and mentally. I have recommended MMG to several friends since then. It was a terrific experience and we will consider MMG for any long weekends camping/hiking in the area.
