We took the ferry from Rockland to vinalhaven. Trip time about 75 minutes. There and back during peak season is 17 roundtrip. If you have no car, no reservations are necessary. Social distancing was handled well and staff were attentive and efficient Facilities were clean and the Ferry route is beautiful going past the jetty, owl's point, the small islands, waterman working the water. If this was a tour boat you would pay almost five times for the same experience. Cannot say enough about the experience.

Timing and booking takes a bit of work. But the ferry itself is fantastic, on time, clean and very efficient. We took a few times back and forth from mainland to North haven. Was most fun in the dense fog :) definitely get out on the car deck and feel the breeze.

It was my first time on the ferry to North Haven and sadly unpleasant. The short of it: a staff person raised her voice at me when I asked if I needed a return ticket. We were instructed to tear our ticket so the staff could see if before boarding. When returning, I had misplaced my other ticket I was supposed to keep (I did not know this — no staff mentioned it. It is also different than Peaks Island ferry where you do not need a returning ticket). I asked a staff person if I needed a return ticket because I had misplaced mine. She was instantly frustrated, raised her voice and told me I “need a ticket like everyone else.” I found my old torn ticket in my pocket and showed her that. She then yelled that I needed to go get another ticket. I had to buy another round trip ticket for 17 to get back to Rockland. The kicker is when I went to board with my new ticket, a friend had found my ticket and brought it to the ferry. The staff woman shrugged.
