Wonderful place to stop. It is 4 miles of the hwy but worth the detour. You are able to walk around the perimeter if the entire fort and read stories on each post along the way which will take you back. Standing inside the fort you are able to imagine what it must have felt like at that moment of the attack. This is a very historic place especially since fallen soldiers are actually buried at this location. My only wish is that they would place a flag on the pole.

Very interesting to see this place. Expected an actual structure of some kind but after looking at the photo on the site we can see that the fort consisted of many many wagons put in a circle, and a somewhat primitive stone & branch barrier wall built around the wagons. It's all very interesting. It's a beautiful scenic drive to get back into the area where the fort site is located. There are lots of placquards to read about the history of the site and there are tombstones.
I typically drop by with family every year while hunting. The panels are somewhat neat to see and it's kinda of cool to read about the surrounding history. It's in ok condition for where it's at. If your in the area and just need a place to step out of the car and walk around for bit it's pretty good. I don't think there is a bathroom though.
I am thoroughly distressed over the total lack of the lack of care and consideration given to a national historic site at Fort Dilts North Dakota, at least 8 active US soldiers gave their life. It may be to some that is just obscure site of little significance, however the family of those brave men may have other feelings.
I took my grandchildren there and it has a lot of history for you to read. They mowed around all the markers so you could read each and everyone of them.
