If you want to avoid all the road work and slow vehicles on the Alaska Highway then you should consider traveling the Alaska Marine Highway. Not only will you get a completely different view of Alaska, but you'll also get to bring the kitchen sink with you. Load your car, truck, or RV onto the ferry. There are cabins for overnight sleeping or you can pitch a tent on the deck. Bring the camera and binoculars because there is a lot to see out there.

It's a ferry terminal, what is there to say. We did have to wait 3 hours to get on the ferry that was supposed to leave at 8:45 pm, but they didn't start loading until 8:45 so we were 2 hours late. Apparently when they wrote up the schedule they didn't take refueling time into consideration.
