The Williamson County Historical society (WCHS) is an amazing organization. My search of family history has taken me to many other counties and states. I’ve found nothing that comes even close to matching the artifacts , records and staff of the WCHS. Once more, the volunteers who make this organization great continue to work every day to make it even better. The WCHS is not just an historic building filled with antiques; it is a dynamic organization with a powerful website, and a staff willing and able to inform and educate.

My wife and I stopped by on a rainy day and learned so much about local history. Exhibits are nice but but you will only get half the story if you don't chat with the staff. Well worth the visit even if you don't have any family ties to the area.

The staff were incredibly helpful in my search for family history- what a wealth of well-organized resources! The museum was interesting, also.

Williamson County Historical Museum

The museum is an old converted county jail and sheriff's home built in 1913 with about 23 rooms of historical artifacts including native American artifacts, old jail cells from prohibition days, antique clothing, implements , tools and much more. In addition, the museum houses an extensive genealogical and historical research library with marriage, death, census and court records from Williamson County Illinois' past. it is a must see for anyone visiting in Marion. The museum is also one of five properties in the county that is on the National Registry of Historic Places.
