Goodhue Flagpole (aka Pasadena Memorial 115 feet tall Flagpole @ Orange Grove and Colorado) Dedicated February 12, 1927, to the men and women of Pasadena who served in World War I. (A List of Pasadenans who gave their lives in WWI is in the Star News, February 11, 1927.) Originally in the center of Orange Grove/West Colorado intersection it was moved to the NE corner because it was declared a traffic hazard. “In Proved Remembrance of Our Glorious Dead MCMXVIII” is the inscription. Designed by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue and built by Lee Lawrie. Goodhue is celebrated for his work in Spanish Colonial Revival design in California and Hawaii, for Gothic Revival, and with Paul Cret helped popularize Art Deco design in the US. Works by Goodhue include the Los Angeles Central Library; the master plan at Caltech and the Physics Building, Dabney Hall, and other campus buildings; St. James' Episcopal Church in South Pasadena, El Fureidis Estate in Montecito, Saint Thomas Church in New York City, the Nebraska State Capitol, and the Chapel and Original Campus of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Goodhue is buried at the work he considered to be his finest, the Church of the Intercession in New York. Lee Lawrie and Bertram Goodhue collaborated on many projects, bringing Lawrie to the forefront of the architectural industry. Lee Lawrie is one of the United States’ most influential architectural sculptors and perhaps best known for the sculpture of Atlas at Rockefeller Center.
