When I saw on Air b&b that the first ever Earthship was available, I jumped at the chance and booked right away. My husband and I have been doing so good with COVID-19 compliance, but it was definitely time for a much needed respite from the doldrums of being stuck in our own house for months and months on end. The idea of a road trip, where we could rent a place and just be by ourselves . . . That concept was very attractive to me when I was planning our trip. The booking was extremely easy, and our host was great at reaching out and communicating with us about our arrival. When we entered the Earthship, it was a little chilly at first. I set to work right away with making a fire in the little beehive fireplace. It was very efficient and took the chill right out of the air. The bathroom and shower are both located inside the indoor south-facing greenhouse. During the day, you can open the windows from the greenhouse to let heat into the Earthship. One unexpected surprise of our visit here was the honor of meeting the host and creator of the Earthship model himself - Michael Reynolds. Like a total nerd, I expressed to him what an honor it was to meet him in person and that I was a big fan. All in all, it was a delightful 2-night stay for my husband and I and gave us a ton of ideas about sustainable building design. Thank you to our hosts, who provided such a unique and one-of-a-kind experience in a beautiful setting.

What a fun stay in eco history! Not good for those with mobility issues, but I loved the space, super quiet. I would like more light in the kitchen, but that was probably part of the energy savings plan in the early 70s when incandescent was almost the only type of electrical lighting system available, especially for residential buildings.

Such a neat experience. We are wanting to build one, so we took a trip to Taos and tried out a couple. Very unique stay, in the bathroom it feels like you are in the great outdoors.
