My friend and I were at the original dedication back in 1973. We were in the first brochure showing the dedication. What a difference between then and now. We used to spend the whole weekend by ourselves and have a wonderful time there just the two of us.

While the main observatory is closed for upgrades to the telescope, the temporary site at Stonehenge is great. The rangers teaching are wonderful and full of information, even on nights where there’s too much cloud cover. Highly recommend! The views of the Columbia River Gorge and Mt Hood are worth the visit on their own.

I'd never even heard of the Goldendale Observatory before the trip. It's a 2h drive out from Portland but it's totally worth it. There was a full moon so the viewing options were a little limited but even so, we got to check out the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, and Epsilon Lyrae (the "Double Double" star system). The guide (Troy?) was really fantastic and did a great job getting all the kids engaged while also keeping the adults interested. They had two scopes going the entire evening and pointed at different things so the lines weren't too long.

We came for the evening presentation and were rewarded with a Nebula view. Be warned, if you come on a cold day, the telescope is kept at the same temperature as the outdoors, so bring your jacket and scarf and hat, etc. The presentation was informative and interesting. We will be coming back in the summer.
